The 2023 Region 1 Competition in Albany was again a great experience for everyone. We had 17 schools and 28 teams compete this year, including one from outside our region. Below is the list of the winning schools. Congratulations to all the teams and their coaches! Very well done!

Region 1 will be hosting an open concrete problem at the regional conference and competition held in Albany, New York on November 9-11, 2023.  The problem is sponsored by Baker Concrete and is open to both graduate and undergraduate teams. The venue for the event is the Albany Hilton and the area is easily accessible by plane or train.  Details regarding registration and the problem specifics will be distributed in the next few weeks.

The ASC Region 1 Mid-Year Meeting is coming up on Wednesday, 21 June 2023. Norwich University will be hosting us, but there is also an option to attend online. University members should have received an electronic calendar invite that includes the address but also the Zoom link. If a member did not receive this and wants to attend, contact Erik Backus.

It has been some time since we reached out to you from Region 1.  We hope your 2023 is going well through this point.  I am reaching out to you as we need to plan for our upcoming mid-year meeting.

This year’s mid-year meeting will be held at Norwich University, hosted by Dr. Nadia Al-Aubaidy.  The precise date of the meeting was left as TBD at the Annual Meeting that occurred in Albany in November 2022.  To that end, this survey will help determine the date of the Mid-Year meeting and any open agenda items:   https://forms.gle/4jEj1GUVda3nPCL38

Invited/welcomed attendees to this meeting are:  a) any faculty of any ASC member school, b) representatives of the judging firms for the 2023 competition (Skanska [Design-Build], Whiting-Turner [Comm. Const.], Consigli [Pre-con], Flatiron [Heavy-Civil], Baker Concrete [Open Concrete Solutions]), c) the industry liaison, and d) the competition coordinator (vacant).

The meeting will be on a date of least conflict for those that wish to travel to be in-person (preferred) during May or June of 2023.  The general schedule of the event will be:

• First Day (optional): An Iraqi dinner at Dr. Al-Aubaidy’s home
• Second Day: Meeting and Lunch at Norwich University

More details will follow once specific dates/times are selected.  A virtual meeting link will be provided for those that cannot travel to be in person, at a later date as well.
